Many factors could cause someone to make a career change. The most notable reason echoed by my connections was flexible scheduling, the ability to work anywhere (fully remote), and improved culture. The pandemic certainly amplified the want to work from home for many.
No matter the reason, a change can be daunting, but it is certainly not impossible.
Feeling a little stuck? Looking for something new?
Here are some tips for reinventing yourself and making a successful career change. Whether you're just starting your professional life or nearing retirement age, there is no wrong time to make a change!
1. Evaluate your skills and interests
When considering a career change, evaluating your skills and interests is essential. While you're at it, ask yourself: What are you good at? What do you enjoy doing? Consider the types of jobs that use those skills and interests. There are many different career paths to choose from, so there's sure to be one that matches what you're looking for.
2. Research different career paths
Once you've narrowed down your skills and interests, search job boards and connect with people on LinkedIn in the company/line of work you want to explore. Leveraging your network (even those 2nd and 3rd-level connections) is one of the best ways to learn about a new career.
Networking can help you learn about the day-to-day responsibilities of the job, the necessary skills and experience, and sometimes even the salary range.
3. Take classes or workshops
If you're interested in a particular career but don't have the experience or knowledge yet, consider taking classes or workshops. Many vocational schools and community colleges offer short-term courses in various fields. You can also find online courses through websites such as Edx, Coursera, Codecademy, FutureLearn, and Udemy, among others. The more experience and knowledge you have about a new career, the better prepared you'll be for making the transition.
4. Start volunteering or interning
Volunteering or interning is a great way to start a new career without making a big commitment. It can also help you build your resume and network with potential employers. Talk to local charities or businesses in the field you're interested in to see if they have any volunteer opportunities available.
5. Be patient - it may take time to make the transition
Making a career change can be daunting, especially if you're somewhat unfamiliar with the new field. It may take time to learn all the necessary skills and find a job in your new area. Be patient, and don't give up - it's worth it when you finally reach your goals!
Bonus - 6. Stay optimistic and believe in yourself!
The most important thing to remember when making a career change is to stay positive and believe in yourself! It may be challenging, but you can do it if you set your mind.
Now, get exploring!
Making a career change can be daunting, but it's certainly not impossible. Finding the right path for you may take time and effort, but with perseverance and a positive attitude, you can transition to a new career.
